Definition and advantages of a Greentelligent.Website

What is a Greentelligent.Website ?

A Greentelligent.website is optimized in terms of technology and content and is therefore energy-efficient. It combines the advantages of a good and economically successful website with a resource-saving, climate-friendly approach.

If the website is found faster, it saves power.

The faster a user becomes aware of your website, the less energy he „wastes“ . Visibility in the results on Google & Co. and in other digital channels thus becomes an important factor for a climate-friendly website. The investment in search engine optimization therefore pays off twice for you. An ideal target harmony.

If the website loads faster when called up, this saves further energy.

Sounds logical, and it is. Long loading websites are a nuisance for every user, but also for the climate. If you start here and make your website a Greentelligent.website, you kill two birds with one stone. You become more climate-friendly and please your visitors. In addition, Google appreciates fast loading times and gives your website a better ranking on the search results pages.

If the visitor reaches your website faster, it is definitely a lot more climate- and user-friendly.

Clear content structuring with well thought-out navigation elements enable every visitor to find his way to his destination quickly and without detours on your website or in your store. Optimizing this process and the entire usability of your web application leads to effective, goal-oriented visits to your website. Here, the visitor arrives at the goal and does not have to continue searching and thus let further servers, nodes and end devices work (and consume power). This is in your sense and good for the climate, so really greentelligent.

A concrete example to imagine the impact of a website on the climate?

A prospect coming from Google already consumes power before landing on your website. Google needs as much energy as a big city (Spiegel.de). Each Google search consumes 0.3 watt hours. If people Google 20 times, that's the power consumption of an energy-saving lamp in 1 hour. If you are found faster, you save energy even before the visitor comes to you.

An average webpage weighs 2080 KB, a responsive, i.e. optimized for mobile devices page weighs about 1885 KB. (httparchive.org)

This includes, for example, the HTML document, images, videos, but also fonts, scripts and other media. The energy consumption per loaded data volume depends, among other things, on the location of the visitor and the web server of the visited page, we use a statistically determined average value of 1.8 kWH per GB of data. (On Global Electricity Usage of Communication Technology: Trends to 2030)

From these values (depending on the current energy infrastructure and the spread and use of sustainable energy), the amount of 1.76 grams of carbon emissions per call of a single page can be calculated.

If we take into account, for example, the usual amount of 10,000 visitors per month, we come to 211.11 kg of carbon emissions annually just for a single domain.

That is more than the carbon emissions of an airplane flying from Frankfurt to Munich.

A detailed analysis of carbon emissions during data transmission on the Internet is also available, for example, on the pages of the International Energy Agency in this report.

The way to the Greentelligent.Website

How is the way to Greentelligent.Website ?

The advantages of a Greentelligent.Website are obvious. It is more energy-efficient and offers a range of technical and content advantages that positively influence the user-friendliness and thus the success of the website.

To be awarded as Greentelligent.Website, a detailed analysis is necessary. If your website achieves a score of at least 66 points, you will automatically receive permission from us to use the Greentelligent.Website seal on the audited website for one year. If the website does not reach the required score in the first audit, a second audit (detailed analysis) is included after the execution of the rectifications.

How do I get the certificate „Greentelligent.Website “?

To be awarded as Greentelligent.Website, a detailed analysis is necessary. If your website achieves a score of at least 66 points, you will automatically receive permission from us to use the Greentelligent.Website seal on the audited website for one year. If the website does not reach the required score in the first audit, a second audit (detailed analysis) is included after the execution of the rectifications.

How long is the certificate valid?

The term of the certificate is one year. After that, a repeated examination is necessary to be allowed to continue using the award.

Why is retesting necessary after one year?

Websites and online stores often undergo technical and content changes, for example, new images and videos are used, products and product categories are added, or the new subpage on the topic of „sustainability in the company“ is programmed and inserted into the website. Not all criteria for a sustainable and performant website are always kept in mind. A renewed analysis of the website should ensure that the site continues to perform well after changes and does not drag unnecessary weight around with it.

How do I find out what I can specifically improve?

In addition to the detailed analysis, concrete suggestions for improvement can be requested for the audited criteria. In total, more than 100 criteria divided into different categories are included in this list, such as page load times, search engine compatible structures, weight and carbon emissions when loading your pages and properties of your hoster. You will receive detailed list for optimization regarding technical editing (file sizes, loading processes, page structures) as well as content editing (meta information, readability, spelling errors).

What is tested during the free short analysis?

We want to create awareness for the increasing energy demand of websites and at the same time show the synergy effects of energy efficient sites.

With our free short analysis, we examine a single web page within your website and test it with regard to 4 crucial factors. The four tests performed are:

How is the page loading speed?

How well is the site prepared for search engine optimization?

What is the carbon emission of the website per call?

Is the site hosted green?

These tests only apply to a single page of your website and give a first impression of how resource-efficient the single page you entered is. The result does not necessarily apply to other pages in your presence.

What is examined in the paid detailed analysis?

In contrast to the free short analysis, in the detailed analysis we examine your entire web presence under the entered domain (up to 80 sub-pages).

The four tests performed are:

How is the page loading speed?

How well is the page found and ranked by search engines?

What is the CO2 emission of the website per call?

Is the site hosted green?

Each of the (up to 80) pages of your domain is individually subjected to the four tests.

Subsequently, you will receive:

  • Analysis with comprehensive report of results and transparent list of audited criteria.
  • General indications for improvement in the criteria studied.
  • If the website does not achieve the required score in the first review, a second review (detailed analysis) is included after the rectifications have been carried out.
  • Investigated websites that achieve a score of 66 points or better are awarded with Greentelligent.Website seal.
  • Delivery of the individual certificate and permission to use the Greentelligent.Website seal on the audited website for one year.

How is measurement done? And which measurement methods are used?

Which pages from my domain are scanned?

In our detailed analysis, we evaluate up to 80 sub-pages of your website simultaneously and can thus show exact values of each individual page.

For websites with more than 80 pages, we first create a representative test pool. We do not select the pages to be examined manually, but have them determined by an algorithm. We examine exactly the page, which is displayed by search engines for your domain as the first sorted by relevance and popularity.

This ensures that the optimization potential and subsequent improvements benefit at least the pages that are most frequently visited. In this way, you achieve a maximum effect for the Internet through your improvement measures.

How is performance and loading speed measured?

For our first test, we access the tool Google Speed Insights as well as Core Web Vitals, which provides us with detailed evaluations of certain parameters that influence the loading speed. In our detailed analysis, we evaluate up to 80 sub-pages of your website at the same time and can thus show exact values of each individual page. The results of this test are included in the Greentelligent.Website Score with a weighting of 35 %.

How is the findability of a website measured?

We measure the findability of a website via an interface from DataforSeo, with which we perform up to 80 individual analyses.

The analyses include tests whether the pages of your website are well structured and understandable for search engines. In addition, syntactic checks of the content and meta-information of your pages are performed.

The results of this test are included in the Greentelligent.Website Score with a weighting of 20 %.

How are carbon emissions from a website measured?

Carbon emissions depend on many internal and external factors.

Based on statistics from the German Federal Office and the Federal Environment Agency on the energy consumption of IT technologies and the associated carbon emissions, taking into account the current energy infrastructure and the current share of sustainable energy sources (published in study On Global Electricity Usage of Communication Technology: Trends to 2030.

Based on this data and the weight of your web pages, the pollutants generated by the data transmission are calculated and compared with a constantly growing database of websites tested worldwide.

A detailed analysis of carbon emissions during data transmission on the Internet is also available, for example, on the pages of the International Energy Agency in this report.

The results of this test are included in the Greentelligent.Website Score with a weighting of 35 %.

How is the climate friendliness of my hoster determined?

Climate-friendly hosting is a crucial factor of a sustainable website. To evaluate your hoster, we make use of the Green Web Foundation database. It is the world's largest database of green web hosts. The results of this test are included in the Greentelligent Score with a weighting of 10 %.

How reliable are the results of the detailed test?

In order to get the most independent and neutral result of all tests, we perform the detailed analysis at least 3 times within a certain time window. Taking into account the above mentioned weightings of the individual tests, the result is a Greentelligent.Website Score. Investigated websites that achieve a score of 66 points or better are awarded the Greentelligent.Website seal.

I have problems with the short analysis of my URL

I do not get a result in a subrange

In order for your URL to be examined, it must be publicly accessible and enabled for the analysis bots.

Password-protected page areas or URLs blocked for bots or, for example, pages that are still in a protected development environment can unfortunately not be fully examined with the help of the short analysis. Then it happens that individual key figures or even all values show 0.

If you or your administrator have access to the domain configuration of your URL and can set there that the tested page is accessible for bots, you can perform the short analysis.

If you don't have information on this or can't make the settings, feel free to contact us and we'll take a look at the settings for you.

I often get different values for repeated short analyses

Among other things, the performance and page load time of your URL is examined, which also has an influence on your Greentelligent.Website Score.

The page load time is not only dependent on factors that can be directly influenced in your site, but also on environmental factors, such as the currently prevailing traffic on the Internet, short performance fluctuations on your server or particularly high traffic on your domain at the time of analysis.

If you commission a detailed analysis, there will be several test runs of many pages in your domain and then an average will be taken from that.

The detailed analyses are also carried out at night, at times when there are no strong fluctuations on the Internet to prevent the most accurate performance analysis possible.

It is best to make several test runs at different times. Then, even with the short analysis, a fairly accurate assessment of the performance is already possible.
